What works offline

Create and edit notes, organize folders and tags, follow links between downloaded notes, and search the local index. Take a photo, scan a page, draw, record audio, and attach a file already on your device. Export a local copy without uploading the notebook.

Local reminders can appear without a network connection when notifications are allowed. Transcription and text recognition depend on supported languages and downloaded system assets. Their availability is shown separately from the note itself.

What needs a connection

Opening a new website, fetching an article, downloading an iCloud attachment, and transferring changes through iCloud need a connection. So do downloading the app, restoring a purchase, or installing new language assets.

A link saved in a note does not make its destination available offline. Save the article content or a PDF while connected if you need the material later.

Check before you leave

The notebook status distinguishes downloaded content from files waiting for iCloud. Open important notes and attachments, then test them in Airplane Mode. A recently opened title is not proof that every attached PDF or recording is on the device.

For the simplest offline setup, create the notebook in On My iPhone or On My iPad. Keep a separate backup before travelling.
