Standard Notes or Memobound for private writing
Standard Notes centers its product on encrypted notes, offline copies, and secure cloud sync. Memobound centers its notebook on Apple document locations and readable exports.
At a glance
| Consideration | Standard Notes | Memobound beta |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | Encrypted notes with cloud sync and offline copies | Local files with optional iCloud Drive |
| Offline access | Offline copies are part of the product | Downloaded documents work offline |
| Portability decision | Use the export and backup tools for its formats | Work with TextBundle, Markdown, and attachments |
When Standard Notes fits
Standard Notes fits people who prioritize its encryption model and availability across devices. Its product documentation describes offline access, so a switch is not necessary merely to read notes without a connection.
When Memobound fits
Memobound fits when a notebook should be a folder of documents visible in Files. It combines writing with scans, handwriting, article capture, and audio on iPhone and iPad. Optional Apple sync is a separate choice from local use.
Check a restore as well as an export
If you use encrypted backups, keep the password and recovery material somewhere you can access independently. Test a small readable export without exposing sensitive notes. Compare the app’s protection with the protection of any exported files rather than assuming they are identical.
Make a usable backup or request TestFlight access.
